About the City on a Hill Foundation

City on a Hill Foundation is an independent, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 1994 in the service of City on a Hill Charter Public School.

City on a Hill Charter Public School graduates college-ready students that are responsible, resourceful and respectful democratic citizens, who are prepared to compete in 21st century community, culture and commerce. We do so by emphasizing academic achievement, citizenship, teacher leadership, and public accountability. City on a Hill Charter Public School opened its doors in 1995 in the Huntington Ave YMCA, and is currently located on Circuit Street in Roxbury, MA. 



As a member of the City on a Hill Foundation (the “Foundation”), and its sole employee, the Director of Development will work closely with the Foundation’s Board of Directors and City on a Hill Charter Public School (the “School”) administrators to steward donors to the Foundation and streamline development-related communications from the Foundation and from the School. This role will report directly to the Executive Director of City on a Hill Charter Public School, in their capacity as an ex-officio Director of the Foundation Board.


Fundraising & Donor Stewardship

  • Work closely with the Foundation’s Board of Directors, the School’s Board of Trustees, and the School’s management team and leaders to develop a fundraising strategy which meets the current and future needs of the School;
  • Develop relationships with donors, with an eye toward deepening existing relationships and broadening the overall donor base;
  • Operationalize the annual City on a Hill Gala, and other fundraising events, including managing volunteers, external vendors, etc - while focusing on seizing opportunities to streamline all processes;
  • Prepare the Foundation Board and the School Board members, and School management, for development-related meetings, donation requests, and donor follow-up;
  • Implement and manage the CRM (currently Salesforce) to track all donor- and grant-related information and strengthen the use of data, analytics, and reporting.

Foundation & School Communications

  • Meet regularly with the Executive Director and other School leaders to ensure continued maintenance of a comprehensive, current understanding of School milestones, successes, events, overall direction, and results;  funnel this understanding, broadly and as applicable, in all development-related communications;
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive communications strategy which effectively stewards donors, communicates recent School successes, and shares the School’s plans for the future;
  • Maintain and update all social media accounts and act as website administrator for the School’s website;
  • Collaborate with and manage external consultant(s) to complete a donor-facing Annual Report summarizing results of the School and the Foundation;
  • Manage student tour guides and School leaders to welcome and execute external visits to the School;
  • Draft and/or review external communications for the Executive Director of the School; and
  • Manage certain, various administrative tasks related to development, communications, compliance, and the Foundation Board (eg. collaborating with Business Manager to ensure adherence to fiscal policies, submitting annual statements to the Commonwealth, among others).


  • A belief that all students can and must learn at high levels and a commitment your own continued learning, particularly as it relates to City on a Hill’s journey to operating as an anti-racist school;
  • 5-10 years experience in development or operations;
  • Experience executing complex events, preferably in a school/non-profit setting;
  • Ability to perform complex tasks, meticulously organize, and prioritize multiple projects;
  • Independent, autonomous, motivated worker;
  • Self-starter with excellent follow-through and ability to “manage up”;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with many different constituents (e.g., Foundation Board members, School Board members, School leaders, donors, students) 
  • Experience and proficiency in Google Suite (e.g., Google Calendar, Docs, Slides, Sheets, etc)


  • CRM experience, particularly Salesforce
  • Marketing experience, including social media, SEO, website or email marketing, Adobe photoshop and Illustrator
