The Director of Development role at a City on a Hill, will report into the Chief Strategy and Operations Officer.  This position will be located at our Network office, in Boston, MA and will require some travel to all locations.  

The essentials duties and responsibilities of this role will be: 

  • Work with Senior Leadership Team, and Board of Trustees to define a Development strategy in keeping with the overall organizational mission; oversee cultivation of key donor relationships
  •  Participate with Senor Leadership and the Board in charting the network’s course in public and private fundraising
  • Ensure that fundraising is carried out in keeping with the network’s values, mission, vision and plans
  • Develop and cultivate strategic relationships with foundations, donors, community leaders, elected officials, and prospective board members that align with network goals and strategy
  • Help leadership identify and address Development issues, if/ when they arise
  • Provide general oversight of all of City on a Hill’s Development activities, managing the day to-day operations of the development team, and monitoring key activities
  • Design and execute a multi-year Development strategy, meeting or exceeding fundraising goals
  •  Allocate resources strategically to staff, supervise, and mentor all members of the Development team
  • Appropriately and effectively represent the organization to donors, prospects, regulators, development and event committee(s)
  • Oversee development and writing of foundation, corporate and government proposals and solicitation materials
  • Oversee design and implementation of cultivation, acknowledgment and recognition programs
  • Oversee all communications and marketing to donor community
  • Oversee effective public relations and press strategy and implementation
  • Oversee all CoaH fundraising and donor events, with support of Development team
  • Works with the CEO, Board Development Committee, and Board of Trustees to ensure fulfillment of Development roles and facilitate the optimum interaction between management and board
  •  With the Board Development Committee(s) chair(s), develop agendas for meetings so that the committees can fulfill their responsibilities effectively
  • Get the best thinking and involvement of each Board member and stimulate each one to give his/her best


  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to build strong personal relationships
  • Experience planning successful fundraising events
  • Experience working with Salesforce or other donor tracking database
  • Experience working with design software, preferably Adobe CreateSuite
  • Experience with email marketing software, preferably MailChimp
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and prioritize under pressure, while exercising judgement and maintaining a high level of accuracy in all assigned tasks
  • Constantly reflects, relishes feedback, and seeks opportunities to improve
  • Flexible attitude, hard-worker, and pro-active team player
  • Brings humor and positivity to the organization
  • Experience working in a non-profit or school is preferred

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with minimum of 4-5 years of development/fundraising experience      
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with current and prospective donors
  • Flexible attitude, hard-worker, and pro-active team player
  • Experience working in a non-profit or school is preferred
  • Experience managing a team
  • Desire to work in urban education
